Halfway Through the Year: Reflections
The job search continues. But a lot has happened. Time for reflection.
Where I Am
Still job hunting. Still building. Still writing.
The numbers:
- 8+ months unemployed
- 150+ applications
- This blog: 50 posts
It's been a journey.
What's Working
This Blog
Writing regularly has been the best decision I made this year.
Benefits:
- Forces me to articulate thoughts
- Creates a public portfolio
- Connects me with others
- Keeps skills sharp
Some posts get decent traffic. More importantly, they give me something to show.
Building Projects
TextGuard, ZipDrop, the chatbot tutorial... these aren't just portfolio pieces. They're proof I'm still in the game.
Every recruiter who looks at my GitHub sees recent activity. That matters.
Community
The Coder Life Discord has been essential for my mental health. Finding people who understand is huge.
What's Hard
The Silence
Apply. Wait. Nothing. Repeat.
The automated rejections almost feel better than the silence. At least you know.
Motivation Swings
Some days I'm energized. Building, writing, applying.
Other days it's hard to open the laptop.
Both are okay. This is a marathon.
The Market
It's tough out there. Layoffs, hiring freezes, competition for every role.
I can't control that. I can only control what I do.
What I've Learned
1. **Consistency beats intensity** - Small daily efforts add up 2. **Your worth isn't your employment** - Easier said than internalized 3. **Community matters** - Don't isolate 4. **Keep building** - Skills don't expire because you're unemployed 5. **Take breaks** - Burnout helps no one
Moving Forward
I don't know when I'll find the right role. But I know I will.
In the meantime: write, build, connect, apply. Repeat.
To everyone else in this boat: you're not alone. Keep going.
