Revisiting Poetry Asylum
Wow.. you know its been years since I’ve put any serious thought into Poetry Asylum and almost just as long since it was taken down due to Moving around so much both physically and digitally. Life moved on without it for a long time. Things got lost, priorities changed, and so on.\r\n\r\nWell come to think of it, you likely have no idea what I’m talking about unless you’ve known me a long time. So for the three readers interested in my blog that I barely write on I will explain..\r\n\r\nA long time ago I was heavy into reading and writing poetry, and I wanted to share it with the world, well my peers mostly, and at that time a means of sharing things like we do in this day and age barely existed, I’m talking about pre Facebook, Myspace, Twitter.. In a time when even WordPress and blogs were barely conceivable. We had AOL, if your unfortunate enough to know what that means then I’m sorry, to those who don’t I’ll spare you the rant.\r\n\r\nHowever some sites did exist, one of which I found called poetry.com which to this day still exists, but when I first found it I was lured in by the hype of possibly being able to get my poetry in a book, having it accessible to the world, and so on, so I posted a handful of entries and gave them a shot.\r\n\r\nFrom there I was never able to find my poetry on a public spectrum to share with my friends, family, etc.. Then one day eventually comes and I get a letter in the mail from poetry.com, telling me my poetry was “hand selected to be in a book” and it listed one of the titles to one of the poems I posted. But before it could be put in the book I had to sign consent over to them to allow them to do so. I also had to give them 70$ to do it, of course they promised me a copy of the book when it came out so it kind of made it worth it. So I did, I signed it sent it off with 70$ and never got my book, never found any physical copy of the book anywhere and that was the last I heard of it. Who knows maybe it was a fluke, my bad luck. But its been almost 12 years so I don’t think its ever going to come.\r\n\r\nAnyway the point behind that pretense is this what sparked poetryasylum.com. I felt betrayed, I felt like others may feel the same way I did and maybe they wanted to share too. So I started out building a site on geocities.com (now yahoo’s web hosting (which sucks by the way but maybe ill go into that on another post)), it first started out as something very simple and very ugly of just my own stuff. Then a couple friends of mine wanted in on it, and then eventually a couple of there friends. So I thought to myself how can I make it easy for everyone to do it that doesn’t have me running raged doing it myself all day. That’s when I picked up PHP and mySQL and got to work building the first version of Poetry Asylum\r\n\r\nWell many years and many versions of poetry asylum came and passed until one day I started moving around a lot, and money began to get tight, and life just kinda got in the way. But in its time running at its peek poetry asylum had several thousand users and several more thousand poems, digital works of art, and some other stuff.\r\n\r\nSo with all that said I have been thinking about Revisiting Poetry Asylum, building it bigger and better than before. Maybe people will come back, maybe new people will find it and like it, who knows. Overall the site is just a pet project of mine. But over the last several months I have been toying with the idea of resurrecting it and I think I may start the plans soon.
